Ocean Mixed Layer Depth From Dissipation

چکیده
The mixed layer depth (MLD) is a widely used parameter for physical, chemical, and biological oceanography. MLD delimits that region of the ocean, which directly influenced by atmosphere. There similar length scale referred to as mixing depth, determined from profiles dissipation rate turbulent kinetic energy, but less prevalent due requirement specialized instrumentation. Here, we suggest can be estimated using density/temperature (henceforth hD) or h?). Utilizing two data sets in North Atlantic collected with autonomous Air-Sea Interaction Profiler, hD h? upper 100 m are compared. A new method based on shape profile estimating presented. main sources turbulence ocean (i.e., wind, waves, buoyancy fluxes), tend deepen MLD, more strongly correlated variability both sets, confirming derived measurements represents accurately layer. Given have become operational development microstructure technology, then it appropriate adopted future estimation MLD. This additionally supported fact typically overestimates when compared h?, thus having consequences studies where represent extent ocean.

Ocean Mixed Layer
The ocean mixed layer (OML), the ocean region adjacent to the air–sea interface, is typically tens of meters deep, and due to the fact that it is well mixed, the temperature and salinity (and therefore the density) are fairly uniform. The rapidly changing regions below these uniform regions of temperature, salinity, and density are called the thermocline, halocline, and pycnocline, respectively...
متن کاملThe effect of ocean mixed layer depth on climate in slab ocean aquaplanet experiments
The effect of ocean mixed layer depth on climate is explored in a suite of slab ocean aquaplanet simulations with different mixed layer depths ranging from a globally uniform value of 50–2.4 m. In addition to the expected increase in the amplitude of the seasonal cycle in temperature with decreasing ocean mixed layer depth, the simulated climates differ in several less intuitive ways including ...
متن کاملEffects of high-frequency wind sampling on simulated mixed layer depth and upper ocean temperature
[1] Effects of high-frequency wind sampling on a near-global ocean model are studied by forcing the model with a 12 hourly averaged wind product and its 24 hourly subsamples in separate experiments. The differences in mixed layer depth and sea surface temperature resulting from these experiments are examined, and the underlying physical processes are investigated. The 24 hourly subsampling not ...
متن کاملProcesses that influence sea surface temperature and ocean mixed layer depth variability in a coupled model
A 50-year coupled atmosphere-ocean model integration is used to study sea surface temperature (SST) and mixed layer depth (h), and the processes which influence them. The model consists of an atmospheric general circulation model coupled to an ocean mixed layer model in ice-free regions. The midlatitude SST variability is simulated fairly well, although the maximum variance is underestimated an...
